Cluster of Exellence

The Fraunhofer Clusters of Excellence promote the cooperative development and processing of system-relevant topics through a cross-institute research structure. Organizationally, these research clusters correspond to a "virtual institute" that is spread across several locations. The research clusters are not only aimed at the temporary implementation of a single project, but rather pursue a roadmap for the long-term development of a complex technology trend.

Fraunhofer Cluster of Excellence Cognitive Internet Technologies CCIT

The cluster researches cognitive technologies for the industrial internet. Researchers from various disciplines are developing key technologies along the value chain, from sensors to intelligent learning methods for data processing and the cloud.

Fraunhofer Cluster of Excellence Programmable Materials CPM

The Fraunhofer Cluster develops materials or material systems whose internal structure is designed and manufactured in such a way that the material properties in the component can be specifically adjusted or even reversibly changed. This allows novel, complex and locally different functions to be implemented.

Fraunhofer Cluster of Excellence Integrated Energy Systems CINES

The cluster addresses the central technological and economic challenges of the energy transition. The aim is the system and market integration of high shares of variable renewable energies into the energy system. To this end, CINES pools the expertise of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft's institutes for applied energy research.

Fraunhofer Cluster of Excellence Circular Plastics Economy CCPE

Using plastics as an example, the participating Fraunhofer Institutes are demonstrating how energy and material flows in a recycling chain can be transformed into a circular economy. To this end, special system services are being developed with and for the plastics industry, including the associated consumer goods and retail companies and the circular economy.
